Cesc Fabregas in EPL Team of the Year.
Last week in London, the annual PFA (Professional Footballers Association) team of the year was announced.
Incredibly in the internet age, ballots are still collected months before the season ends, which in this case led to a team that contains players who have not played for months! This voting system must be re-addressed as I believe many deserving individuals have simply been ignored.

Manchester United dominated the team, which is as follows:

Edwin van der Sar (Man Utd), Gary Neville (Man Utd), Nemanja Vidic (Man Utd), Rio Ferdinand (Man Utd), Patrice Evra (Man Utd), Ryan Giggs (Man Utd), Paul Scholes (Man Utd), Cristiano Ronaldo (Man Utd), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Didier Drogba (Chelsea) and Dimitar Berbatov (Tottenham).

I know United has been great this season but this is ridiculous. I find it very hard to believe that the pros really think that eight Red Devils deserve to be in the team. Perhaps they haven't watched as many matches as I have, as this following XI should've been honored in my book.

Goalkeeper: Tim Howard (Everton)

After being cast aside by Manchester United, Howard has seen his career reborn at Goodison Park. Thirteen clean sheets in all competitions is testament to not only his back four but also a renewed commitment to the art of goalkeeping. Howard now has a presence that was lacking at Old Trafford and he'll eventually take the torch from Brad Friedel at Ewood Park.

Right-back: Steve Finnan (Liverpool)

The shocking omission of Finnan simply blows me away. According to the EPL web site's 'Actim Stats', he is the best defender in the Premiership but I don't need numbers to tell me that. He is simply the most consistent full-back in the country and the fact that he regularly starts for a Liverpool side which changes faster than English weather tells you all you need to know.

Center-back: Jamie Carragher (Liverpool)

What does Carragher have to do to be recognized as one of the greatest defenders of his generation? It seems to me that he's destined to play the bridesmaid role behind Ferdinand and Terry, which doesn't seem right when you consider how he brings it each and every single game — plus he is versatile and can play anywhere.

Left-back: Matthew Taylor (Portsmouth)

C'mon, Steve McClaren! What are you waiting for? The most attack-minded defender in the EPL has scored nine goals, that's right, nine goals this season and almost every one of them has been a goal of the season candidate. At 25, he's just about to enter his prime.

Right Midfield: Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United)

The Players' Player of the Year is playing a different game to everybody else — he is the Tiger Woods of football and there aren't enough superlatives to describe him. Ronaldo in full flow is simply the greatest sight in football.

Center Midfield: Paul Scholes (Manchester United)

After missing half of last season through blurred vision, the 'Ginger Prince' has driven United forward with consummate skill. Please, the next time you watch Scholes play just see how many times he gives the ball away — no matter what kind of pass he plays it always finds the right target. His decision-making is second to none and if I were Steve McClaren, I'd get down on hands and knees and beg him to come back to the national team.

Center Midfield: Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal)

Cesc turns 20 next week and incredibly he already has 124 first-team appearances to his name. Have any of us ever seen a young player with so much maturity? He makes that Arsenal machine tick along, playing a brand of football that at times defies belief. If Arsene Wenger can give him the surrounding cast, Cesc will become the most valuable maestro in all of football.

Left Midfield: Mikel Arteta (Everton)

David Moyes will be fighting tooth and nail to hold onto the Spanish gem in the off-season. Eight goals combined with eleven assists makes Arteta an automatic in my EPL XI. Here is a player who can do it all and for him to be overlooked is a staggering oversight by his fellow pros — there are teams other than United.

Center Forward: Didier Drogba (Chelsea)

Ronaldo's only competition for the PFA award was the Ivorian, who has plundered 31 goals to date in all competitions. I really admire how Drogba has handled himself this season as he's slowly eradicated the gamesmanship that defined his game the previous two seasons. He leads the line superbly while taking a fearful battering and rightly takes his place amongst the best in the game.

Center Forward: Benni McCarthy (Blackburn)

The bargain of the season at $5 million — Benni has scored 21 goals, lies third in the Golden Boot race and is regularly ignored because he plays in the backwater of Ewood Park. Pace, power and craft are the tools of a quality striker and McCarthy has the full set.

I believe that this is the team that best reflects the Premiership this season and would suggest that in the next term the players be allowed to vote towards the end of the campaign. To earn all-EPL honors a body of work should be looked at, not just the first five months.

Fabregas urges team to 'go for it' next season.

Cesc Fabregas has urged his team-mates to play with more aggression next season and simply “go for it” in the title race. Arsenal’s record against this term's other top four sides is a source of pride for the 20-year-old Spaniard however he believes their losses to some of the lower-placed teams are not acceptable. It has meant Arsène Wenger’s side, although safe in the Champions League places, have never really mounted a sustained challenge for top spot.

“It was a big gap this year,” said Fabregas, “and last season also. But remember last season we were in the final of the Champions League. Let's see if we can do it next season.            “I am sure we can - that is the mentality here to win things and we will go for it. “I think we should be proud of our record this season [playing the top sides]. You win the title against the big teams but if you do not win against the other sides you will not win it. Arsenal cannot accept that.

“If you are ambitious and really want to win the title, you have to play with more a gressiveness and do your job properly. We have to really go for it.” Fabregas is expected to be named in the Arsenal squad for the season-closing game at Portsmouth on Sunday. Wenger’s side are currently fourth but can rise a place if they achieve a better result than Liverpool, who entertain relegated Charlton. It will be no limp end-of-season affair for Fabregas.        “For me there is a big difference between third and fourth,” he concluded. “We are playing for honour, so we have to go for third place.”

Fabregas is Arsenal.com's Player of the Month. Wednesday, May 02, 2007

Cesc Fabregas has won the Arsenal.com Player of the Month award for April by a landslide.

The 19-year-old received over two thirds of the votes cast in our official poll - a mammoth 67.45 per cent. And it's no great surprise after a month which saw Fabregas supplement his influential midfield performances with a couple of cracking goals.

April started in frustrating fashion for Fabregas as Arsenal drew a blank against West Ham and Newcastle. But that all changed against Bolton as Fabregas - after so many near-misses - scored his first Premiership goal in a little under a year. The teenager followed that three days later with a spectacular strike in a 3-1 win against Manchester City which all but secured a Champions League place.

Fabregas was laid low by a virus ahead of the North London derby and only just made the bench at White Hart Lane. He was called into action earlier than expected when Freddie Ljungberg limped off in the first half but responded with a commanding performance as Arsenal dominated the rest of a pulsating 2-2 draw. Fabregas claimed the assist for both of the visitors' goals.

He started Arsenal's final game of the month - against Fulham - and once again ran the show from his central role. The fans were certainly impressed, handing Fabregas one of the largest shares of the vote since the Arsenal.com Player of the Month award began.

Gael Clichy claimed second place, a reward for his consistency at left back and a man-of-the-match display against Fulham. Emmanuel Adebayor, carrying the attacking burden in the absence of Thierry Henry and Robin van Persie, finished third after scoring two goals and working tirelessly throughout April.

Fabregas will become more powerful. Monday, April 23, 2007

Despite evidence to the contrary at White Hart Lane on Saturday, Cesc Fabregas is not “a finished man” on the football pitch according to Arsène Wenger.

At the weekend, the 19-year-old Spanish midfielder engineered an Arsenal comeback on the ground of their fiercest rivals for the second time this season. The first had been that incredible two-goal rally in the Carling Cup. This one was perhaps even more remarkable because Fabregas had been laid low with a virus earlier in the week and barely trained. Wenger decided to leave him on the bench at the start of the game and was unsure whether to use him at all until after the warm-up.

“I did not want to take a gamble with him because he had played 45 games this season,” said Wenger. “He had not practiced. But after the injury [to Ljungberg] I did not have much choice. After the warm-up I told him to tell me how he feels in case we needed him. He said he felt well.”

Fabregas certainly played like someone in rude health, providing assists for both Arsenal goals. It was his 150th game for the Club. In just three years since signing from Barcelona he has become one of the central cogs in the Wenger’s side and, according to the manager, there is still room for improvement.

"Defensively he can get much better," said the Frenchman. "Physically there is still an injection of power to come between 20 and 22. When that comes in, you become a finished man."

Fabregas nominated for PFA player awards. Monday, April 16,2007

Cesc Fabregas has been nominated for both Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year awards.

The Arsenal midfielder has made the shortlist for the main award alongside Manchester United trio Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, plus Chelsea striker Didier Drogba and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

Fabregas and Ronaldo are also in the frame for the PFA Young Player of the Year award. Wayne Rooney, Kevin Doyle, Aaron Lennon and Micah Richards have also been nominated.

The news caps a memorable few days for Fabregas, who scored his first Premiership goal of the season in Saturday's vital 2-1 victory against Bolton at Emirates Stadium.

The Spanish international has been a revelation since making his first-team breakthrough. He became the Club's youngest player and youngest scorer shortly after moving to London from Barcelona in September 2003. Now, at the age of 19, he is one of the most influential players in the Arsenal squad.

The PFA chief executive, Gordon Taylor, was full of praise for Fabregas after unveiling the nominees. He said: "Fabregas has been a marvellous player for Arsenal who, when they are in full flow, are wonderful to watch - with Fabregas usually at the heart of every move.

"He is the one who makes them tick and, to see him so composed in the midfield action area, you would think that there is a much older head on those young shoulders because he has such remarkable vision and perception of what is going on around him.

"He is going to be a player for all seasons if he keeps going the way he is."
