Cesc Fabregas hits the winner as Arsenal beat Hannover 96

July 30th, 2009

Cesc Fabregas fired the winning goal to maintain Arsenal’s unbeaten start to their pre-season campaign.

The Arsenal skipper made an immediate impact on his return after playing for Spain in the Confederations Cup in South Africa.

William Gallas and new boy Thomas Vermaelen impressed too, forming a solid defensive partnership.

Fabregas scored after nine minutes, taking the ball around Hannover keeper Robert Enke before sliding it home.

In a sign he may be joining the Emirates exodus, Emmanuel Eboue threw his shirt and boots to the fans afterwards.

Cesc Fabregas: Injury Scared Me, But It’s Nothing Serious

June 11th, 2009

Cesc has admitted that a gush of blood from a wound on his head gave him a fright, but assured everyone that it’s nothing more than a minor injury.

Spain continued its rampaging good form on Tuesday evening with a comprehensive 6-0 win over Azerbaijan in Baku in an international friendly. Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas was given a rare start after La Seleccion coach Vicente del Bosque opted to give his key figures a rest, but the midfielder had the misfortune of picking up an injury just before half-time which cut short his involvement in the game. He suffered what looked like a severe blow to his head which required seven stitches, but he has quickly calmed any fears of a serious injury.

“It was a scare…a good scare. But the important thing is that it’s nothing more than a minor incident,” he told reporters during the post-match press conference. “I was frightened upon seeing the blood pouring down after taking the knock, but after the medics stitched me up, I could have continued playing. But seeing that this was only a friendly, and I was still a little dizzy, we thought we better not push it.”

The 22-year-old then went on to analyse La Furia Roja’s commanding performance over Azerbaijan, even though Berti Vogts’ side did not provide much of a contest.

“It was a positive game for us because we have shown that we confront every game in the same manner, whether it’s a friendly or a competitive match,” he said. “The squad are now very excited about the Confederations Cup. We will head to South Africa in a buoyant mood after a good exercise to prepare for the competition. We seriously believe that this tournament is more important than most people think.”

Finally, Cesc emphasised that the European champions’ main objective is to emerge victorious come June 28. “We want to return to Spain with a trophy in our hands for a second consecutive year. We want to give joy to the fans and we feel that we have a good enough team to win it,” he beamed.

Spain will kick-off its Confederations Cup campaign this Sunday against New Zealand.
